Parallel Trail

On October 16th, 2020, Danielle Snyder – an ultra-runner, coach, and therapist – will attempt to set the Fastest Known Time (FKT) for the 142 mile Kokopelli Trail. Beginning in Loma, Colorado and ending in Moab, Utah, the trail winds through desert, canyons, and rugged sandstone ridges, reaching an elevation of 8,400 feet.

Working with Kali Abel – a glaciologist at the University of Portland, writer, and trail runner – the two have created an even greater mission for this demanding FKT by connecting their love of running, their desire to take action against climate change, and their aim to empower women.
While FKT runs and science are both fields that are dominated by men, both women know that their contributions are making a difference. And now they want to encourage other women to join them in helping to create change.

Both Danielle and Kali have spent countless hours on beautiful trails across the U.S. and around the world, and they know that climate change and trail running are ever connected. Climate change impacts so many parts of our lives, but perhaps as smoke inhalation warnings cease to abate, we can see how directly climate change affects our ability to get outside and enjoy the natural world.

That’s why this FKT has an invaluable goal: Raising money to elevate women’s role in the fight against climate change.
The intention behind this fundraiser is to highlight women as catalysts for global change, increase recognition for the interconnectedness of climate change and our daily lives, and, ultimately, to help women support other women achieve their goals.

This funding will:
-  help to support the writing and publication of several articles detailing Danielle’s FKT run, the parallels between the challenge of running FKTs as a woman, and the challenges associated with climate change – which are often also gender biased. These articles will help women to better understand how they can help support other women meet their running and climate action goals and will appear in a range of publications.

- The money raised will also help to support Kali and her research team’s ongoing climate science field work. Right now, much of the research that happens in the field is on hold due to restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. But as glaciers continue to melt and fires rage out of control, we need this work to continue.

-This funding will help women to safely continue their important climate science work and to communicate their successes and challenges to the public. The money raised will also go toward those who work with under-represented populations being most heavily impacted by climate change.

- The final portion of the funding will support Ice to Waves – a woman-run climate initiative based in Oregon with ties to the Mt. Hood Institute (a woman-run 501c3)

Join us in our fight against climate change, and with our goal to elevate women’s voices and to support one another along the way.
